For journalists

Write for Pith News. Get paid for every read.

Pith News is a roster of independent journalists writing perspectives and long reads on the day’s news. You own your workload: how much you write, what you write and when.

Three ways to write for us

Perspectives

Answer a question on today’s cards

Each Need to Know card is open for perspectives. Claim one in your beat and write what it means or what you think.

Briefs

Take a long-read brief

Our editors open briefs to the roster on stories that need more room. Take one that fits and write it your way. We never hand you an angle.

Your own

Write the long read you want to write

Have a story? Write it and submit it.

How pay works

Every time a reader spends a credit on your piece, you earn 60% of that credit’s value after GST. Free reads we offer readers are still paid to you.

  • Paid monthly, for the reads in that month
  • A statement with every payment, which works as your tax invoice
  • GST handled for you if you’re registered
  • See reads and earnings per piece in your dashboard
Example month
Perspective on the RBA310 reads
Perspective on the Senate bill180 reads
Long read, regional housing420 reads
910 reads at about 54c≈ $491
Illustration only. The value of a read depends on the reader’s plan.

What else you get

Tag and lens, out front

Every piece is tagged analysis or opinion and shows its lens on the political spectrum. You can declare your own position and choose whether readers see it, and contest a reading you disagree with.

Your own page

A public writer page with your beats, lens and everything you’ve published, ready to share.

Own your time

Own your time and your workload, and get paid per read.

We read every one. If it’s a fit, an editor will invite you to set up your account.

Questions

Do I need to be registered for GST?

No. You’ll need an ABN. If you’re registered for GST, we add it to your payments.

Who owns what I write?

The contributor agreement sets this out in plain words. You’ll see it in full before you write anything.

How do editors work with me?

Editors check facts, sources and our style before a piece goes out. They don’t change your argument.

What if I miss a deadline?

An unfiled claim goes back to the roster after its window, and your draft is kept. No penalty.
